Following is a statement about Bruce Ennis provided by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the request of American Lawyer Media. Bruce Ennis was the best of lawyers, a caring colleague, and a brave human. We first became acquainted in the early 1970s, when he was a staff attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union. He was then working, literally around the clock, to establish the entitlement of those institutionalized for mental health reasons to decent treatment. His selection, some years later, as ACLU’s national legal director reinvigorated that office. Bruce set a model of excellence in the briefs he wrote, and he was an inspiring teacher. He taught less-experienced lawyers by example, by the painstaking thoroughness of his preparation, and his extraordinary craftsmanship. Whatever the forum — trial or appellate court, legislative chamber, law school auditorium — he tailored his presentations to the particular audience. He did not seek to flatter decision-makers; he sought to persuade them by the power of his reason, demonstrated in carefully chosen words. Bruce was a repeat player at the U.S. Supreme Court, both in his ACLU days and, since 1981, in private practice in Washington, D.C. He earned the respect of all my colleagues for the reliability of the briefs bearing his name, and for his engaging, hardly ever at a loss, conversations with us at oral argument. I treasure the memory of his bright mind and sympatique spirit.
