Leading U.K. commercial law firm Rowe & Maw has lost its high-powered international regulation team to shipping specialist firm Clyde & Co. The team led by partners Philippe Ruttley and Iain McVay are highly regarded for their competition work in the European Union and their expertise in relation to the World Trade Organization. They will start work with Clyde & Co. in the New Year. Ruttley and McVay have had extensive careers in government and the private sector. It is likely their move will dent Rowe & Maw’s longstanding aspiration to be a truly global player. Ruttley, a former legal adviser at the United Nations, has also worked at the Treasury Solicitor’s Department and been a partner at Garretts, the legal side of accountancy giant Arthur Andersen, before joining Rowe & Maw in 1998. He is the Secretary to the World Trade Law Association, which recently held its much publicized conference chaired by Lord Slynn of Hadley. McVay was Rowe & Maw’s Senior WTO Counsel, having had a successful career in the Canadian diplomatic service. Ruttley says: “All my clients are following, which is good news, and it looks as if I will start the New Year with a busy schedule.” Clyde& Co is likely to enhance Ruttley’s practice. It has more than 100 partners in 10 offices, including Hong Kong, Athens, St. Petersburg and Caracas, and claims to be able to provide legal services across 17 major jurisdictions. Rowe & Maw has just over 80 partners, approximately 500 staff in total and offices in Brussels. Its internationally based clients include CNBC Europe, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley & Co. International Ltd.
