Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison became the fourth Silicon Valley firm to bump its base pay for first-year associates to $125,000. The firm announced that it will match associate base pay set by Menlo Park, Calif.’s Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigan last month. The new Brobeck salaries apply firmwide, which moves the trend to Manhattan. Unlike Gunderson, Brobeck’s bonuses are not guaranteed. Associates at Brobeck must meet billable thresholds to trigger a bonus. Brobeck first-year associates will earn a base salary of $125,000, with the potential to earn between $135,000 and $155,000 for billing between 2,100 and 2,400 hours. Fourth- and seventh-year associates could earn an additional $50,000 on top of their respective base salaries of $165,000 and $205,000. This is the first time Silicon Valley associate salaries have exceed those in Manhattan. For the last few years, they have been running at about 90 to 95 percent of New York salaries.
