Ravi Batra, a lawyer who was publicly accused of freezing out two Democratic Party loyalists from patronage appointments, claimed in a court filing that he fired the two because of their inept legal work. Batra, at whose firm Brooklyn Democratic leader Clarence Norman is of counsel, accused the two Democratic Party lawyers of failing to follow his settlement instructions, and then structuring a resolution in a manner that was “legally impossible” and intended to “churn legal fees.” The two lawyers, Arnold J. Ludwig and Thomas J. Garry, found themselves in the public spotlight last week after they wrote a letter complaining that Mr. Batra had fired them despite their “diligent work and unquestioned loyalty to the [Brooklyn Democratic] Organization” over many years. The two lawyers complained that the cases had been reassigned to members of Batra’s firm, a step that they contended, was “unprecedented and disheartening,” and reflected “one man’s greed and self-absorption.” The letter was widely distributed to political figures in Brooklyn and became the subject of newspaper articles in The New York Times and elsewhere.
