Strange as it may seem, a speech by William S. Lee, the judge in the sordid murder trial of prominent Wilmington, Del., lawyer Thomas Capano, has become a feature of Capano's appeal. Capano was convicted and sentenced to death last year in the 1996 shooting death of his mistress, Anne Marie Fahey. Defense lawyers criticized the judge's behavior, saying that during trial he seemed to be seeking publicity. Lee's talk to the Wilmington Rotary Club, about a midtrial meeting, set off criticism again.

Strange as it may seem, a Rotary Club speech by William S. Lee, the judge in the sordid murder trial of prominent Wilmington, Del., lawyer Thomas Capano, has become a feature of Capano’s appeal.
Capano was convicted last year in the 1996 shooting death of his mistress, Anne Marie Fahey, a secretary for Governor Tom Carper. After years of denials, the ex-prosecutor admitted to disposing the body at sea in a cooler but said that a second mistress shot her. The body was never found.
