The competition has toughened among firms angling to represent all thoseretired 32-year-old computer millionaires and their well-funded petstartups. Tech-heavy California firm Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich opened aSeattle branch with nine native corporate lawyers, whom firm chief TerrenceO’Malley wooed from Seattle’s Riddell Williams. Among them is LauraPuckett, who handled last year’s RealNetworks initial public offering andwho clearly got hooked on the Bay Area spirit back while she and the restof Riddell were part of ailing San Francisco firm Graham & James. But afterRiddell divorced Graham & James and returned to using its maiden name,Puckett went looking for a more congenial California roost. This one, shethinks, will be better: “I live in Internet time, and the firm moves inInternet time.” Meanwhile, several Rust Belt firms have been sniffingaround the Pacific Northwest. Minneapolis’ Dorsey & Whitney almostpersuaded the now-70-lawyer Riddell to merge.
