There are many ways the work of a court can be slowed. An out-of-line attorney, a stubborn judge, or a raucous defendant can prevent justice from being served in a timely manner. In Barnstable County, Mass., however, parking issues are causing problems for the legal system. The Barnstable County Circuit Court simply doesn’t have enough parking spaces, critics charge. There are 70 more employees than there are spaces. This shortfall does not include the daily woes of jurors, witnesses, defendants, title examiners, lawyers, and other who need to park at the courthouse. “All of us have a duty to make our agencies accessible to the public,” Register of Probate Fred Claussen says. “This isn’t right. It absolutely isn’t right.” The county has decided to assemble a task force to solve the problem.
