Hoping to cash in on the technology boom, the city of Oakland has engineered a unique land deal with a new corporate resident that ties financial rewards for the city to the company’s future performance.

Celebrated communications equipment start-up Zhone Technologies Inc. recently bought 14 1/2 acres from the city for its new headquarters, paying $6 million in cash and awarding the city warrants for 100,000 shares of its stock.
