Forget those corporate challenge competitions. You know, those televised events that pit the Albany office of Andersen Consulting against the Peoria office of PricewaterhouseCoopers in a tug-of-war. Canadian attorney Khaled Abdel-Barr is taking his team of Vancouver attorneys to the Lawyer’s World Cup of Soccer in Morocco in June. The Lawson Lundell associate described the biannual event as an opportunity to play competitive soccer while hobnobbing with colleagues from across the globe. Although the tournament actually brings together more than 600 lawyers from around the world, don’t expect to see a U.S. team present or prime time ESPN coverage. Despite talk of global business and legal markets, the United States is still largely a country where soccer is viewed in the same light as synchronized swimming. In fact, Abdel-Barr says his Vancouver squad represents the first North American team to compete. Who knows though, maybe soccer will someday catch on in the states — like bowling did in Puerto Rico. When that happens, anticipate a large influx of U.S. firms into Brazil. A base salary of $175,000 for any associate who can do a bicycle kick.
