After three years as an associate at D.C.’s Crowell & Moring, Karen Burke is hanging out with law students again. Only this time she’s getting paid to do it. Burke left the firm earlier this month to take a supervising attorney job at the D.C. Law Students in Court Program, a legal clinic sponsored by the law schools of American, Catholic, Georgetown, Howard, and George Washington universities. Each year about 90 participating law students represent more than 7,000 low-income D.C. residents both in and out of the courtroom. Staff attorneys, like Burke, supervise the soon-to-be lawyers. “I love working with the students,” says Burke, who formerly handled white-collar criminal defense matters at Crowell & Moring. “And I love working with the clients.” In her new job, Burke, 31, trains and supervises the students who handle landlord-tenant and small-claims cases, the bulk of the clinic’s caseload. The clinic currently has nine staff attorneys.
