Edward Green, of counsel at D.C.’s Crowell & Moring, makes a living representing mining companies before the Interior and Labor departments. But the regulatory lawyer has also made time for a different kind of client: Henry Dolan, a 69-year-old Korean War veteran whose service-connected disability claim for an ulcer condition had been denied for decades. Now, after putting in hundreds of hours over the past five years, Green convinced the Veterans Affairs Department to compensate Dolan for his illness. “I know it’s no big deal in terms of earth-shaking work,” says Green, 56, “but I’ve been a lawyer for over 30 years, and this one is right at the top.” Dolan “would call me every few months and say, ‘Are they gonna get to it before I die?’” Victory finally came on Oct. 20, when the Veterans Affairs Benefits and Services Division reversed its stance and agreed to pay Dolan’s claim. He recently received a check for almost $26,000 in back benefits, and will now get about $100 a month. “Here’s this old guy who’s living on minimum Social Security benefits — maybe ten, eleven thousand a year — it was just nice to hang in there for him,” Green says.
