Julia Powell O’Brien, a former business law associate at Day, Berry & Howard, has been named a commissioner of the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. O’Brien, a 33-year-old West Hartford resident, began her three-year term at the state’s anti-discrimination agency earlier this month. O’Brien, who left Day Berry last December for the birth of her daughter, says she contacted the governor’s office this year, looking for an opportunity to “do something legal, something public service-related.” Soon afterwards she was tapped for the CHRO by Senate Minority Leader M. Adela Eads, R-Kent. O’Brien, who graduated from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., joined Day, Berry in the fall of 1996.
