Ed Rendell, the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee, is a New York-born, big-city mayor who’d rather nosh on a pastrami sandwich than grab some McDonald’s fries. The mayor of Philadelphia and President Bill Clinton do have more in common than a fiery temper, though. They’re both world-class fund-raisers. Rendell, in his two mayoral campaigns, raised more than $14 million – one reason President Clinton asked Rendell to be the new Democratic Party chair. Most Philadelphians couldn’t be more thrilled, said David L. Cohen, Rendell’s friend and former chief of staff, who is the chairman of Philadelphia’s Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll. There stand to be fringe benefits for Philadelphia’s lawyers and firms, too. As the new high-profile party chairman, Mr. Rendell will be in a position to refer potential clients to Ballard and other lucky firms. Stay tuned.
