Veteran prosecutors were stunned by what was left at the door to their downtown Augusta, Ga. office last month. Inside a white, plastic bag were the remains of a headless baby goat, the goat’s head, a chicken, a rooster, seven pigeons and a handful of corn kernels. The offering was sprinkled with some kind of yellow-orange powder. “I looked in the bag and saw a hoof,” says Dan Robinson, an investigator with the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office. An Augusta resident whose family has practiced voodoo for generations contacted The Augusta Chronicle after it ran an article about the remains. It was not voodoo, said the resident. Someone might think some spell was being cast but obviously the person who left the bag was making it up as he went along, she said. The cruelty to animals investigation was turned over to a sheriff’s investigator. No witnesses or animal owners have come forward, he says, but some people have called with suggestions, such as viewing the movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”
