The District Attorney’s office in Milwaukee has won a criminal indictment against a strand of DNA on three counts each of rape and kidnapping. The John Doe warrant identifies the suspect only by his DNA profile, obtained by an analysis of semen samples held by police for as much as six years. And that’s the problem. For six years, the police have gotten no closer to this criminal than the traces of his crimes left on his victims. The move is aimed at keeping the statute of limitations from tolling on the first of the attacks. We’re sure the prosecutors have good intentions, and we all know where those lead.
