One of the more interesting products we saw at this year’s TechShow was an “Extranet” from Legal Anywhere. An Extranet is a secure Web site for Internet users who have been specifically approved by the site developer. Counsel Connect was an Extranet as are Lexis and Westlaw, but the term is more usually applied to a free site set up by a company to promote communication with its customers or affiliates.
A corporate law department might set up an Extranet for the benefit of outside counsel and far-flung offices and subsidiaries. A law firm might set up an Extranet for its clients, cooperating counsel, and even opposing counsel.
