When I read the words (see “Don’t Punish Success” ) “ Never mind that it’s not consumers but competitors who are grousing,” I couldn’t resist the urge to point out that, at least in the courtroom, Microsoft is actually on trial not for being successful or even for being big but for violating the country’s laws against anti-competitive behavior.

It would therefore seem silly not to expect competitors among the plaintiffs when Microsoft pressures its customers notto do business with the competitors. This inconvenient fact seems to elude the more radical commentators on both sides of the story, who would rather serve the media with a spectacular story about how Microsoft’s size either makes it evil or makes it critical to the country’s well-being.
