Who says lawyers are soulless and greedy? Douglas S. Sandage, a Houston lawyer/mediator, is running for the U.S. Senate in 2000 on a platform that emphasizes faith and fellowship and renounces consumerism. “I think the path that we’re on, the mileposts are marked off in terms of money, power, celebrity and sex appeal,” says the 48-year-old Democrat who is gunning for Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat. Though he sounds a little Deepak Chopra, his pedigree suggests something far different. He spent the first four years of his legal career, for example, at Baker & Botts, hardly a bastion of New Age spirituality. Sandage says his campaign is propelled by a fear that rampant consumerism is depleting our natural resources and driving us toward global warming. To illustrate his point, he said he’ll spend Labor Day weekend on a long bike trip from his front door to the Rio Grande and back.
