James Montgomery had been a partner in the Austin, Texas, office ofHouston’s Porter & Hedges for nearly three years when he packed his desklast month and moved across town to the local outpost of California’s GrayCary Ware & Freidenrich.

Montgomery, who specializes in corporate work for high-technology companies,simply felt he could no longer compete for clients against the allure ofCalifornia firms.
