The hate-inspired shooting sprees of Benjamin Smith and Buford Furrow Jr. this summer have sparked renewed cries for greater FBI monitoring of hate groups. The impulse is understandable.

Smith, who killed an African-American and Asian and wounded six Jews during a rampage in Illinois and Indiana over the Fourth of July weekend, was linked to the white supremacist World Church of the Creator.
