In July, the National Law Journal requested information from more than two dozen leading recruiters in order to assess the demand for associates and partners in a variety of practice areas. Survey respondents were asked to identify areas that are hot (most in demand), warm (in steady demand), warming (making a comeback or on the rise), cooling (slowing down), cool (in limited demand but not dead) and cold (dead or showing no growth for some time).

Recruiters were asked to grade practice areas on the basis of demand in their geographical areas. Respondents are listed alphabetically by state within each of the regions. The chart lists job prospects for associates and partners by region, except in the in-house category, for which demand is listed nationally.
