Harvard Law students hoping to add extra firepower to their resumes will have to sweat a little more. In recent years, chronic grade inflation at Harvard has pushed the number of 3Ls landing summa, magna, and cum laude diplomas to nearly 75 percent of the class. But this year, the school tossed out its old grade-based honors system – under which all students earning a B+ average more above received honors – and put a new ceiling on the number of honorees. This year only 40 percent walked off with honors. Nor are the students miffed. “It’s always nice to receive honors,” says recent graduate Eric Columbus. “But in reality the only chances you’ll have to use it are in your wedding announcement and your obituary.”
