We were afraid of this. Although he murdered nine people using a handgun, Mark Barton’s Atlanta rampage began when he killed his wife and children by bludgeoning them to death with a hammer. Joe Vandiver, father of Barton’s murdered wife, and evidently a Southerner to his last bone, was thinking not about his slain daughter this week, but rather about his guns. “I just don’t want my daughter’s death to come down to gun-control,” he said. “[Barton] didn’t kill my daughter with a firearm. He killed my daughter with a hammer.” It seems Vandiver’s aim is a little off here. The fact that Barton murdered Vandiver’s daughter with a hammer does not mutually exclude guns from being dangerous weapons. So, what’s your point, Mr. Vandiver? And our condolences, by the way.
