NutraSweet Co. claims several South Florida businesses have been counterfeiting its sweetener, Equal. NutraSweet, which is seeking more than $16 million, claims that eight companies violated Equal's trademark. The suit alleges that a Fla. couple sold bulk quantities of Equal packs to Trio International Trading Inc. The couple would then have the product repackaged in counterfeited boxes bearing the Equal brand. NutraSweet's attorney said the sellers weren't licensed. The couple disputes this point.

NutraSweet Co., the St. Louis-based subsidiary of the Monsanto Co.,says it is the victim of a growing counterfeiting trend in SouthFlorida.
The company claims several South Florida businesses have beencounterfeiting its popular sweetener, Equal. The charge is made in asuit filed in federal court in Miami against eight companies and theirprincipals.
