A Texas prison inmate, Todd Warren Altschul, who is serving time for aggravated assault, deadly weapon possession and retaliation, had sent 46 habeas petitions and a few death threats to the Court of Criminal Appeals over the years. This time, he forged mandates ordering his release from prison. Unhappily, his legal background wasn’t that great and he got caught. “Before the court en banc Justices McCormick, Manfield, Keller,” the type-written mandate began. Not only was Judge Stephen Mansfield’s name misspelled but Altschul must not have known that it takes nine judges to make up an en banc Court of Criminal Appeals. A suspicious clerk at the 9th Court walked the mail across the hall to Jefferson County district attorney investigator Bill Gates, who says authorities will investigate Altschul and two other prison inmates who may be involved in the forgery.
