In Texas, Judge Bob Perkins’ desire for a better view from his chamber in the new Travis County Criminal Justice Center has proved fruitless. Perkins, judge of the 331st District Court, had asked county commissioners to change the design of his ninth-floor office, saying that his court reporter had a better view than he did. He even offered to pay $1,500 for half the construction costs. Nevertheless, Perkins was heavily criticized by one county commissioner and by letter writers to the local newspaper for his attempt and went on vacation last week to sit out the controversy. After finding out that the new center’s budget, which has already doubled from its original $19 million cost, would continue to soar, the commissioners finally decided that it was inappropriate to give Perkins another window.
