As of july 1, Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle L.L.P., the largest law firm in New York state based outside Manhattan, and Boston’s Peabody & Brown merged to form the 450-lawyer firm of Nixon Peabody L.L.P. The new firm, if ranked in The National Law Journal’s 1998 survey of the nation’s 250 largest law firms, would have made it comfortably into the top 50-and might make it this year.

The combined firm now has more than 70 lawyers in Washington, D.C., and more than 60 in New York. It has offices in Albany, Buffalo, Garden City and Rochester, N.Y.; Hartford, Conn.; Manchester, N.H.; and Providence, R.I.
