Top Philadelphia firms raised summer associate salaries in correspondence with the roughly $10,000 increase doled out earlier this year to many first-years. Twenty-two of the largest firms who responded to a survey are offering an average of $110 more per week than in 1998′s summer program. To attract more top students from out of town, the Philly legal community devised a collective marketing strategy, complete with a Web site called Homecourt Advantage. “When you’re interviewing someone from, say, Stanford, who has no connection to Philadelphia, competing with firms from other cities is tougher,” says Ballard Spahr partner Geoff Kahn. Activities designed to endear out-of-towners to Philly, like Delaware River cruises and Old City walks, are part of many summer programs.
