While a blizzard kept her plane stranded for more than six hours on the tarmac at Detroit’s Metro Airport in early January, Northwest passenger Marti Sousanis sat and cried quietly in her seat.

Flight attendants told Sousanis that despite chronic back pain, she couldn’t stand up, and if she did, she could be arrested.
