Despite management’s best efforts, rumors are flying about merger talks between Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal and New York’s Rosenman & Colin L.L.P. Rosenman’s management tried a month ago to quash a rumor that tied a merger to a specific date, by e-mailing attorneys a denial that there were any talks. Chair Joshua Rubenstein has since altered his stance. Earlier this month, still refusing to confirm or deny rumors of a possible July wedding with Sonnenschein, he stated, “It’s exaggerated. All I can say is we talk to law firms all the time, and we are always willing to listen.” Sonnenschein has been keeping a lid on any merger plans. Partners were told only that talks were under way with two Chicago firms and one New York firm. A Rosenman merger would give 479-lawyer Sonnenschein, whose biggest office is in Chicago, a stronger New York foothold, while 274-lawyer Rosenman would get a national platform.
