Utah has become the first state to adopt model legislation to untangle the interstate jurisdictional guardian issues that abet so-called “granny snatching” and, more frequently, thwart well-meaning guardians who have to act in more than one state. Governor Jon Huntsman signed the Uniform Adult Guardianship Protective Proceedings and Jurisdiction Act that gives judges clear guidance on establishing jurisdiction in guardianship cases that involve one or more other states. The act allows Utah judges to speak informally with judges in other states to resolve jurisdiction. The model legislation was drafted by the Uniform Law Commission, an advisory body focused on legal problems common to all states. [See related article, " Dealing with 'Granny snatching'."] According to the Uniform Law Commission, the model act has been sent to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for signature and has passed both houses of the Colorado Legislature.
