Bingham McCutchen has extended its securities practice in Tokyo with the addition of a new partner in Tokyo. Takayasu Koga was formerly with the Japanese Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission, where he handled examinations of securities firms, investment advisers, investment management firms, and futures trading firms. “Mr. Koga’s arrival to Bingham’s Tokyo office extends our market-leading securities practice to Asia and further positions us as a global firm,” Jay Zimmerman, the firm’s chairman, said in a news release. “His government and previous law firm experience fits well with our international finance, securities and financial regulatory practices and allows us to serve our major financial institution, fund management and hedge fund clients conducting business in Japan.” Before joining the Japanese government in 2005, Koga worked with one of Japan’s largest law firms and was involved in mergers and acquisitions, litigation, bankruptcy, and securities regulation matters. Bingham McCutchen’s Japanese practice has lawyers in New York and Japan and focuses on large-scale cross-border restructurings, corporate, mergers and acquisitions, and finance matters, as well as intellectual property, antitrust, and litigation. The firm has nearly 1,000 attorneys in 13 offices.
