It’s been a week since lobbyists have had to meet their new quarterly filing deadline. One holdout, though, has been the National Association of Manufacturers, which sued to challenge part of the new lobbying disclosure law requiring associations to disclose their members. “As of now we are scrambling to finalize the list because we don’t have one single day in which our members pay their dues,” says NAM’s general counsel, Jan Amundson. “We are individually contacting every member that has to be disclosed because we feel we owe that to our members.” A district court judge dismissed the suit last month, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit rejected the trade association’s request for a stay. NAM had filed its report on April 21 while its stay request was pending before the Supreme Court. Instead of disclosing its members, NAM referred to the pending court challenge, which was rejected by Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. later that evening. The trade association will still pursue its case in appellate court. “We believe that this is unconstitutional,” Amundson says. “We’re going to take it all the way.”
