In the April 14 article “ Women law firm leaders still sparse,” I was quoted out of context, and my views distorted. I was quoted, accurately, as follows: “’The best women lawyers get satisfaction out of their practices, and they see little attraction in becoming housekeeping-type law firm leaders,’ Henning said. ‘Many women would rather do their housekeeping chores somewhere else, not in their law firms.’ “ Those quotes were lifted out of context and grossly distort my overall thinking. I said to the reporter in the same e-mail, “The pool of top women lawyers is smaller than the pool of top male lawyers (at the current moment in the profession’s demographic history). This means that the pool of top women lawyers with requisite leadership and management skills is pretty small.” And I went on to say, “While I am generalizing, my experience is that top male lawyers rank practicing law as yielding the greatest professional gratification they can imagine. Few of those who become managing partners and chairmen find those roles as gratifying. This contrasts with lawyers who become general counsel, virtually all of whom love it.” And then I added, “The difference is that few chairmen and managing partners of law firms have the vision and the energy as well as the skills to build the enterprise, to transform it, to perform like a Tom Watson at IBM or a Jack Welch at GE, or a Michael Eisner (in his early days) at Disney. There have been very few Joe Floms, Dick Pogues, Ralph Baxters, Lee Millers….Law firm leaders generally are content merely to keep the place together to be housekeepers.” Finally, I stated, “My experience with women in law firms (and once again I’m generalizing) is that the best women lawyers get satisfaction out of their practices, and they see little attraction in becoming housekeeping type law firm leaders. I believe we will see women with the leadership and management skills and interests become transformative law firm leaders. But many women would rather do housekeeping chores somewhere else, not in their law firms.” I then disputed an assertion of the reporter by stating, “Bottom line, I don’t agree with you that a woman leader who has the skills, the vision and the energy, sends the wrong signals.” And finally, I asked the reporter that, if she was going to represent my views, she “try to do it fairly.” Sadly, I do not believe that the article did fairly represent me, and many friends, colleagues and clients were perplexed when they saw my quote brutally pulled out of context. Joel F. Henning Chicago The writer is a consultant at Hildebrandt International. Editor’s note: In the two paragraphs in the article preceding the quotation by Joel F. Henning at issue, we believe that his e-mailed words were accurately paraphrased.
