The dean of Yeshiva University Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law has announced he will step down on June 30, 2009, when his contract expires. David Rudenstine, a constitutional law scholar, was appointed dean in 2001. He has been a professor at the school since 1979 and was the law school’s first dean to be selected from its faculty. “Being dean has been an unexpectedly exciting and satisfying experience, and stepping down will certainly constitute a significant change for me personally,” Rudenstine said in a news release. “I look forward to rejoining the Cardozo faculty, to writing and teaching, and to days with a different rhythm and intellectual engagement than I have had for many years.” Prior to joining Cardozo, Rudenstine was a project director, associate director, and acting executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. Yeshiva University President Richard Joel credited Rudenstine’s leadership and ability to draw a strong student body, build a distinguished faculty and attract forward-thinking board members. Joel announced he will form a search committee, which will be led by Yeshiva University Vice President Morton Lowengrub and be comprised of Cardozo faculty and representatives of the school community. Cardozo has an alumni base of more than 9,000 living in the United States and internationally.
