LOS ANGELES —� A federal judge in Los Angeles has denied the law firm Milberg’s motion to dismiss a money laundering count in the government’s kickback case. Prosecutors allege that Milberg, which recently changed its name from Milberg Weiss, and seven of its partners, including its founding partner, Melvyn Weiss, obtained $250 million in attorney fees by paying illegal kickbacks to name plaintiffs. Weiss agreed last month to plead guilty to a federal racketeering conspiracy charge and pay nearly $10 million in order to avoid an August trial. His firm, however, remains a defendant in the case. In February, U.S. District Judge John Walter, for the Central District of California, refused to grant four out of five dismissal motions filed by Milberg in the case. He denied the fifth motion on Monday.
