LOS ANGELES — A federal judge in Los Angeles has ordered civil rights lawyer Stephen Yagman to begin serving a three-year sentence on Monday, March 31. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson ordered that Yagman, who was convicted last year on tax evasion, bankruptcy fraud and money laundering, report to a prison in Butner, N.C. Yagman’s sentence, originally scheduled to begin on Jan. 15, has been delayed numerous times. Yagman has sought to remain free on bail while appealing his conviction. In January, Wilson denied that request; the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that denial earlier this month. Yagman, who retained constitutional scholar Erwin Chemerinsky to represent him in the appeal of his conviction, has filed a petition before the 9th Circuit to rehear his bail request en banc.
