For a lawyer, an hour spent hassling with airport security is a potential billable hour down the tube. That’s something Steven Brill, the founder of Clear — a service that allows subscribers to bypass conventional security lines — is happy to capitalize on. Brill, the founder of The American Lawyer magazine and Court TV, as well as one-time owner of Legal Times, was in town last week hawking his newest venture, which opened at Reagan National and Dulles International airports on March 19. Travelers who join Clear for $128 per year are issued cards that allow them to avoid regular airport security and instead use exclusive Clear lanes. Lawyers, says Brill, make up a huge part of his clientele. “In a nutshell, they travel an awful lot, and they’re also trained to put real value on their time.” Brill estimates that Clear personnel have visited upwards of a dozen major law firms, including Wiley Rein and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, to recruit subscribers on-site.
