The University of La Verne College of Law in Ontario, Calif., announced the opening of its Justice & Immigration Clinic that will allow students to work on asylum petitions under the supervision of a practicing attorney. The law students, working with Diane Uchimiya, the JIC’s clinical law professor and supervising attorney, have prepared pleadings for three Latin American immigrants who were minors when they attempted to enter the United States. None was accompanied by an adult family member and each is now in the custody of family with lawful immigration status. Asylum would allow them to remain in the United States lawfully to avoid persecution in their home countries, Uchimiya said. The immigration clinic is the second pro bono clinic opened at La Verne.Last summer the law school opened the Disability Rights Legal Center. “Clinical offerings consistently rank high among the factors prospective law students consider when they choose a law school,” said Alexis Thompson, ULV College of Law’s assistant dean of admissions. “In fact, clinical programs are right up there among other top factors, including a law school’s location and the reputation of its academic programs and curricula.”
