DETROIT Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has hired Chicago powerhouse attorney Daniel K. Webb to represent him in connection with a criminal investigation stemming from a text message scandal. Kilpatrick faces possible perjury charges for allegedly lying under oath during a police whistleblower lawsuit last summer when he denied having a romantic relationship with his former chief of staff. Sexually explicit text messages, released in January by the Detroit Free Press, contradicted Kilpatrick’s testimony. Webb, chairman at Winston & Strawn and a former U.S. attorney in Chicago, is no stranger to representing those caught up in political scandals. Most recently, he served as lead counsel in the public corruption trial of former Illinois Governor George H. Ryan, who is serving a six and a 1/2 year prison sentence after being convicted in 2006 of racketeering and fraud. Webb, who has tried more than 100 jury cases, has won numerous white-collar criminal trials, as both a prosecutor and defense lawyer. He received international attention for his successful prosecution of retired Admiral John Poindexter in the Iran-Contra affair. His corporate clients have included General Electric, Phillips Morris and Microsoft.
