Nick Seddon, who led the Asia practice for DLA Piper, the world’s largest law firm, will join Heller Ehrman early this summer as regional managing shareholder, the firm has announced. The firm hopes the move will position it for further growth in Asia, where it already has four offices. Seddon has been DLA Piper’s managing director for Asia since 2004 and saw the number of offices in the region increase from four to six and the practice expand by 300%, according to Heller Ehrman. His career also included serving as managing partner of DLA’s Birmingham and Edinburgh offices. “Based on his past success in Asia and Europe, we are confident that Nick will rapidly expand our Asia practice consistent with maintaining the highest quality,” Heller Ehrman’s chairman, Matthew Larrabee, said in a news release. In his new role, Seddon will follow Jonathan Palmer, who is completing a three-year term in Asia and will return to the United States later this year. Palmer is expected to continue his antitrust and complex commercial disputes practice out of Seattle. “The Asia practice is an integral part of Heller Ehrman’s strategic growth plan, making Nick’s addition an important milestone for us in Asia and for the firm,” Palmer said in a news release. Heller Ehrman has more than 30 attorneys in Asia. The firm said that in 2007, more than 100 U.S. clients purchased legal services from its Asia practitioners. In addition, lawyers in the firm’s nine U.S. offices have represented more than 50 Asia-based clients. Heller Ehrman opened its Hong Kong office in 1993, followed by Singapore in 1994, Beijing in 2004 and Shanghai in January. Worldwide, the firm has 650 attorneys and professionals in 14 offices.
