LOS ANGELES – The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has denied an appeal by convicted civil rights attorney Stephen Yagman to overturn an earlier order denying him bail. With the ruling, Yagman, a partner at Yagman, Yagman & Reichmann, in Venice Beach, Calif., is expected to begin serving his three-year prison sentence in the coming weeks. Yagman was convicted last year on tax evasion, bankruptcy fraud and money laundering. In January, U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson denied Yagman’s request to remain free on bail while appealing his conviction. Yagman had claimed there were “substantial questions of fact or law” in his case that could reverse his conviction. On Monday, the 9th Circuit disagreed, sending the case back to Wilson. Yagman originally was scheduled to begin serving his sentence on Jan. 15 but was granted a two-week delay after his aunt died in New York. He filed his 9th Circuit petition the day before he was expected to begin his sentence. Yagman’s lawyer, Barry Tarlow, a partner at Tarlow & Berk in Los Angeles, did not return a call for comment.
