CHICAGO — Bell, Boyd & Lloyd, a midsize Chicago-based firm, has opened its first office on the West Coast, creating a San Diego presence that will focus on providing intellectual property legal services in the life sciences area and also general corporate services, especially for emerging companies. The office is starting up with the arrival of two new partners, Stephanie L. Seidman, a biotechnology scientist and patent attorney joining from the firm Fish & Richardson, and David Fisher, a corporate lawyer who led Fisher Thurber in the city, the firm said in a release. Frank Miskiel, from Fish & Richardson, as well as Cheryl Allaire, Gregory Brucia, and Alidad Vakili, all from Fisher Thurber, are also joining the office as associates, the firm said. In addition, seven technology specialists who are not lawyers and have expertise in molecular biology, immunology and organic chemistry, among other things, will follow Seidman to the new office, the firm said. “We think that given our growth in the intellectual property area and life sciences and biopharmaceutical practice group, coupled with venture capital and private equity, that southern California, is a place that makes sense for us,” said Bell Boyd Chairman Jack McCarthy. Bell Boyd has 265 attorneys firmwide and an office in Washington, in addition to its Chicago headquarters and the new outpost.
