Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Fredrikson & Byron has announced the opening of a Shanghai office, its first in Asia and sixth overall. The office will be headed by Brinton Scott, a U.S. lawyer with more than 10 years experience as a foreign legal expert in China. Scott, a shareholder, has advised clients in mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, technology licensing, and foreign direct investment in China. Scott will be joined by Zhan “Jerry” Liu, an associate who is admitted to practice in China and the United States. Shareholder Ruilin Li will serve as the firm’s U.S. chief representative for the China office. “Fredrikson & Byron’s office in Shanghai strengthens our commitment to serving our clients’ expanding needs in China,” John Koneck, the firm’s president, said in a news release. “Brinton Scott brings practical, hands-on experience in China to help us establish our presence in Shanghai. Our clients will benefit from our experience and connections in China.” Fredrikson & Byron has a relationship with the Minnesota Trade Office, which works with the state government to secure ties with Chinese businesses, as well as the University of Minnesota China Center, which promotes research and cultural collaborations between the United States and China. Fredrikson & Byron has 225 attorneys.
