LOS ANGELES The general counsel of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Kevin Reed, has been appointed to the top legal position at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). During his time at the LAUSD, Reed filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa challenging recently passed legislation that would have allowed him to politically take over part of the district’s public school system. Last year, a state appellate court found the legislation unconstitutional. Meanwhile, several candidates with Villaraigosa’s support won local elections last year to fill the majority of seats on the school board. Reed, who has served as general counsel at LAUSD since 2004, will be the vice chancellor for legal affairs at UCLA and associate general counsel for the University of California (UC) system as of March 1. The position is pending the approval of the UC Board of Regents. Before joining LAUSD, Reed was a partner at Strumwasser & Woocher in Santa Monica, Calif., where he specialized in education law, constitutional law, insurance regulation and advising nonprofits.
