The display of hangman’s nooses in the workplace, along with racial slurs and name calling, cost a North Carolina furniture company $465,000. That’s how much Henredon Furniture Industries will pay to settle a racial harassment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Employment Opportunity Commission, the EEOC announced Thursday. In the last decade, the EEOC has sued more than three dozen employers over noose incidents, collecting more than $2 million in settlements in the last year alone. In this most recent case, according to the EEOC, African-American employees for years were subjected to a persistent racially hostile work environment at a furniture plant, including noose displays and racial slurs. In addition to the $465,000 in compensatory damages, the settlement includes injunctive relief enjoining the company from engaging in racial harassment or retaliation, mandates anti-discrimination training and requires the settlement be posted at work. EEOC v. Henredon Furniture Industries Inc., No. 1:06CV00744 M.D.N.C.
