Former U.S. ambassador Edward “Terry” Shumaker is leaving his post as general counsel and executive director and of the National Education Association in New Hampshire for the Portland, Maine-based Bernstein Shur. Shumaker, who is also a veteran New Hampshire labor and employment attorney, is scheduled to join Bernstein’s Manchester, N.H., office on March 1. He was U.S. ambassador to Trinidad from 1997 to 2001. At the firm, Shumaker’s practice will focus on commercial and employment arbitration and mediation and labor and employment counseling. “I am excited about joining Bernstein Shur, a firm I have always respected,” Shumaker said. Bringing Shumaker into the firm is an important step in the firm’s plan to beef up its Manchester office, said Portland-based managing shareholder Charles E. Miller. “Our goal in continuing to expand the Manchester practice is to provide clients in the New Hampshire region with a wide range of unmatched legal expertise and services,” Miller said.
