BOSTON — Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley reported a record $26.7 million in settlements and judgments for Medicaid fraud cases in 2007. The total tops annual recoveries since the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Division’s predecessor office was formed in 1978. The division, which investigates and prosecutes fraud against the state Medicaid program, which provides health insurance to people with low incomes. The office investigated more than 60 cases of alleged fraud last year. Medicaid is a multi-billion dollar joint state and federal program that provides health insurance for the economically disadvantaged. “We will continue to partner with state and federal agencies to defend the Commonwealth’s coffers from fraudulent practices by unscrupulous providers,” said Coakley. Last year’s top state Medicaid fraud recovery settled out of court for $8.15 million. Willow Street Medical Laboratory, a Lynn, Mass.-based independent clinical laboratory faced allegations of overpayment and inappropriate referrals. The attorney general also settled with four of 13 generic drug manufacturers facing charges of false price reporting. The company’s price reporting led to inflated Massachusetts Medicaid payments for the company’s drugs. Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Mylan Laboratories Inc., No. 03-11865 (D. Mass.)
