LOS ANGELES — Nathan Hochman, a tax litigator in Los Angeles, will become assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice’s tax division in Washington. Hochman, a principal at Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez in Beverly Hills, Calif., will be joining the DOJ on Jan. 22. Nominated by President Bush, Hochman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 19 and fills a post left vacant since June. As assistant attorney general, Hochman will head civil and criminal federal tax enforcement actions, targeting tax evaders and abusive tax shelters. Before joining private practice, Hochman was assistant U.S. attorney in the criminal division for the Central District of California from 1990 to 1997. He also served as the environmental crimes coordinator and headed the Los Angeles Disaster Fraud Task Force, which was created in the wake of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. He left to join the law firm that his late father, Bruce Hochman, co-founded.
