Chicago’s Mayer Brown has agreed to combine with Johnson Stokes & Master, a leading Asian law firm. Starting January 28, the combined firm will have seven offices in Asia, six in Europe and eight in the Americas, including a recently opened office in Brazil. The attorney ranks will exceed 1,000 in the United States, 500 in Europe and 300 in Asia. Currently, Mayer Brown has over 1,500 lawyers in seven U.S. and six European cities, as well as Hong Kong and Sao Paulo, Brazil. “This is a truly transformational event that makes Mayer Brown unique among global law firms,” James D. Holzhauer, the firm’s chairman, said in a news release. Established in Hong Kong in 1863, Johnson Stokes & Master is one of the oldest and largest law firms in Asia. In addition to Hong Kong, the firm has offices in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai in China; Bangkok, Thailand; and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The firm has more than 260 lawyers. The Asian firm considered teaming up with other firms but saw Mayer Brown as the best fit, according to a news release. “Like Mayer Brown, we have a business-minded, results-oriented approach to solving complex legal issues for clients,” Elaine Lo, chairwoman of JSM’s partnership board, said in a statement. The combined firm will continue to be known as Mayer Brown outside of Asia. In Asia, it will be called Mayer Brown JSM. The Asian offices will be managed by an Asia Board with Lo serving as the chair.
